This was growing wild in our garden this spring. We had planted passionfruit plants a few years ago but they never really took off. I guess they just needed a bit more time.

This was, for a time, the only clone of this plant in existence, after the other seedlings died in the summer heat of the Missouri Botanical Garden and the original Colombian plant was killed. Recently additional seedlings have come out of Colombia and there are a few in the trade here in San Francisco. This is a truly spectacular flower in all respects.

Grown by the San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum.

Best Viewed Large to appreciate the flowers.

Passionfruit flower with ants

A passionfruit flower, with an ant or two attached, in a yard in Putnam County, Tennessee, USA. These flowers are about 3 inches/1 dm across. There are wild passionfruit plants growing in upstate South Carolina, and, I suppose, in Tennessee and elsewhere. In South Carolina, they are also known as "maypops" because of the fruit, which is about the size of a golf ball, and makes a satisfying "pop" sound when you step on it. I understand that the fruit is edible, but I’ve never tried it.

The flower of this plant are elaborate, for sure. They also have interesting tendrils. See here for a photo of such a tendril, from a plant in California.

Since this flower is so elaborate, I couldn’t get all of it in really sharp focus, but the larger sizes do show some nice details. Isn’t God a great artist?

A Passiflora flower, growing on a plant in a back yard in San Diego County, California. These flowers are approximately 2 1/2 inches/1 dm across, and, of course, they are three-dimensional, so it’s hard to get them totally in focus. Nonetheless, the camera seems to have captured this one pretty well, as you can see from the details at the larger sizes.

While capturing this curly little tendril on a passionfruit vine, I noticed I had a bonus with the arrival of this little flying insect. It was about 3/16th of an inch long.

In New Zealand and Australia passionfruit is available commercially both fresh and tinned. Fresh passionfruit is eaten for breakfast in the Summer months, is added to fruit salads, and fresh fruit pulp or passion fruit sauce is commonly used in desserts, including as a topping for pavlova (a regional meringue cake) and ice cream, a flavouring for cheesecake, and in the icing of vanilla slices. A passion fruit-flavoured soft drink called Passiona has also been manufactured in Australia for several decades. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Passiflora_edulis

Pueden ver que la forma de la hoja le da el nombre común a esta especie.

Los miembros de esta familia son importantes plantas hospederas para las orugas de las mariposas, en especial de las llamadas "fritilarias"

Passiflora Seedling
Passiflora

Passiflora caerulea germinating 14 days after sowing. They reportedly are hard to get growing from seed and the package says it takes them 30 days to germinate, so I’m happy to see the first one emerging already! I soaked the seeds in warm water for a day and a half (replacing the water 4-5 times after it cooled) to soften the seed coats before sowing them out on peat pellets. I read that viable seeds sink to the bottom during soaking and about 3/4 of them did right way, while the remaining 1/4 sunk when I replaced the water for the first time. For planting, I just pressed the seeds into the top of the peat pellets without burying them too deeply. They are reported to like it moist and warm for germination (90-100 F during the day, with a temperature drop at night), so I keep the covered tray in my garage, which gets toasty hot on sunny summer days.
